Genetic algorithm spreadsheet add-in solves optimization problems

FYI -- Ward Systems Group has released GeneHunter, a genetic algorithm tool for spreadsheet users.

Genetic algorithms are useful in helping to find solutions for optimization problems, such as balancing portfolios; creating stock-picking rules and optimal trading strategies; or for scheduling manufacturing operations, for example.

Genetic algorithms begin with several potential solutions to a problem. The algorithm selects two parent solutions and then takes parts of each parent to create an entirely new solution. This new solution is tested to see how well it solves the specific problem. The evolutionary process continues until an optimal solution is found.

GeneHunter works as an Excel add-in for nonprogrammers. It's compatible with 32-bit Excel versions (Excel 5 for NT or Excel 7 for Windows 95) or the 16-bit version of Excel for Windows 3.1.

The price is $369, which includes free technical support.
